Remembrance Day Essays And Poems

Of the many poems, posters and essays created by five Kamsack students that had placed well at the local level in the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Remembrance Day competition, five placed well at the zone competition, and two of them had done well at the district competition.

At the district level, an essay written by Keanna Romaniuk, a Grade 10 student at the Kamsack Comprehensive Institute, placed second in the senior category. Her essay had placed first at the zone level.

An essay written by Makayla Romaniuk, Grade 8, placed third in the district competition in the intermediate level. Her essay had placed first at the zone level.

A colour poster created by Katelynn Gouge, Grade 5, placed third in the intermediate level in the zone competition; a poem by Laurissa Fedorchuk, Grade 12, placed second in the senior level at the zone competition, and a poem by Rylee Zbeetnoff, Grade 7, placed third in the intermediate level at the zone competition.

Presenting awards last week to the students on behalf of the Kamsack branch of the Royal Canadian Legion were Judy Green, secretary, and Sharon Rudy, second vice-president.

Entries that did well at the district level will advance to the provincial level, and from there, the winning entries are submitted to the national competition

"... there are some who keep up a tradition of pride in service to the United States of America and remember all those who had fallen .... Let none of us ever forget what Memorial Day really is." --Kathlena Peebles, May 1996
